Regular character count counts each UTF-16 code unit — which can split emojis and certain special characters into 2 "characters." Our Unicode count uses proper grapheme clusters, meaning emojis like ❤️ or characters from Asian languages count as exactly 1 character each.

Byte count shows the actual storage size of your text using UTF-8 encoding — the standard used by most databases, APIs, and file systems. Byte count matters when you are working with API payload limits, database field constraints (like VARCHAR(255)), or file upload size limits.

Twitter/X limits tweets to 280 characters. If you exceed this limit, your tweet will be truncated or you will be forced to split it into a thread. Our progress bar shows exactly where you stand.

Instagram allows captions up to 2,200 characters. However, after 125 characters, the caption is truncated with a "more" link in users feeds. For best results, put your key message in the first 125 characters.
